Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech large stated its iconic music participant has been replaced by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, said: "At present, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an unimaginable music experience throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound high quality with support for spatial audio - there is no higher option to enjoy, uncover, and expertise music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the unique iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented a complete new category of digital music participant that lets you put your whole music collection in your pocket and listen to it wherever you go," he stated at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music will never be the identical again."

Similar MP3 players launched by Microsoft and Sony did not have the identical success as the iPod.

Apple has launched five variations of its music player - the Basic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The corporate has been slowly killing its iPod range lately, with cell phone technology enabling clients to hearken to music providers on their telephones.

In 2014, the traditional click wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano had been killed off three years later.

The seventh-generation iPod contact was the only mannequin nonetheless on sale as we speak.
