Gary Martin, a senior at Archbishop Wooden High College Warminster, Penn., broke a prestigious observe and area report at the Pennsylvania Catholic League Championship on Monday by running a mile in beneath four minutes. Martin's run broke a document that had stood for practically 60 years.

Martin ran a mile in 3:57:98 without the help of a pacer, breaking a file that had been set by Jim Ryun in 1965.

Ryun turned the first excessive schooler to run a mile in under four minutes in 1964, then broke his personal report 5 instances before graduating. Ryun's time of record was 3:58.3, a mark which Martin broke by lower than a second.

Martin is now the 14th American highschool athlete to interrupt 4 minutes, and his time now ranks third all-time in outdoor runs. It ought to be noted, though, that Ryun was the only athlete to take action in excessive school-only competitors, with out using a pacer.

Martin's run was a major milestone he prepares to attend the College of Virginia upon graduation. Speaking about his long-term goals, Martin hopes to turn out to be an Olympic athlete.

"I would wish to assume that it is not loopy for me to say that it's a dream now," Martin advised CBS Information. "Obviously, I am still an extended ways away and have some work to do, but I am assured in my potential. I have the dream, now I simply need to put the work in and chase it."

Based on his beating Ryun's mark, Martin's desires could very well be in reach. After his document run within the 1960s, Ryun went on to compete in three Olympic finals, profitable silver in 1500m during the 1968 Mexico Metropolis Olympics.
