16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college capturing that would have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Division stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging system materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which will lead to demise or great bodily harm.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teenager was a pupil at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they discovered parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and digital objects that could possibly be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a excessive priority for the division," police said in a press release. 

Details on whom the teenager was trying to recruit weren't disclosed. Police stated this case stays underneath investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens advised the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon parts, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this era, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our standard follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual did not pose a direct threat to the Berkeley Excessive School group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary action against the coed. 

In addition, a town hall assembly titled: 'The way to Speak to Children About Faculty Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Schooling is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
